Designer, Kahindo Mateene, was a contestant on season 12 of Project Runway and we are fortunate enough to be able to have her showcase her designs at this year’s Fashion Meets Music Festival. We picked her brain to find out what inspires her, read on!

FMMF: How would you describe your style of design?

Kahindo Mateene: Classically feminine silhouettes in bold prints and vibrant colors.

FMMF: How has music inspired your designs or design process?

KM: Music is a constant in my studio, when I am sketching a new collection, selecting fabrics, and working late designing. It keeps me motivated and gives me energy on those late nights.

FMMF: Other than music, where do you get your inspiration from?

KM: I am Congolese from the Democratic Republic of Congo, so my culture is a constant source of inspiration.

FMMF: What’s one thing about you that people might not know?

KM: I speak 5 languages

FMMF: What are you looking forward to the most about Fashion Meets Music Festival?

KM: Seeing my designs come to life and walk down the runway accompanied by really cool music from one of the bands.

FMMF: If you could design a custom piece for any musician, who would you create it for and what would it be?

KM: It’s a toss up between Gwen Stefani and Solange Knowles. They both have such a distinct sense of style and are not afraid of experimenting. I would design a piece that was a blend of their personal aesthetic in a bold Modahnik print. Something funky and sophisticated.
