Get To Know Designer Celeste Malvar-Stewart
Celeste Malvar-Stewart was one of our featured designers at FMMF 2014, and we’re thrilled that she will be joining us again for FMMF 2015. Celeste is presenting her Local Sound Collection in September which is inspired by music by Reptile Fiction. It’s a runway show not to miss!
Fashion Meets Music Festival: How would you describe your style of design?
Celeste Malvar-Stewart: Not ordinary
FMMF: How has music inspired your designs or design process?
CMS: My Local Sound Collection – created especially for FMMF – was inspired by the sound that comes via music and by the music of Reptile Fiction. The Local Sound Project sprung from the idea of how we can approach and interpret sound, within our respective art forms. Benji Robinson of Reptile Fiction created 8 songs that incorporate sounds from Columbus, and I designed 8 couture pieces that translate Benji’s music sound waves onto the pieces…this will allow the audience the dynamics of hearing the music while seeing it on moving pieces in a true runway environment.
FMMF: Other than music, where do you get your inspiration from?
CMS: Visually, I am inspired by the extraordinary and simple shapes and textures in nature. I am also inspired by passionate artists who attempt to create in mindful ways, using conscientious design models.
FMMF: What’s one thing about you that people might not know?
CMS: I like to fence, with the épée as my weapon of choice.
FMMF: What are you looking forward to the most about Fashion Meets Music Festival?
CMS: The fashion actually meeting the music! I think it’s a brilliant concept and has so much room for exploration in fusing the two worlds, while giving the audience a unique festival experience.
FMMF: If you could design a custom piece for any musician, who would you create it for and what would it be?
Bono. I would create an unconventional Irish Kilt for him and then faint.
